Remarks from TCC’s Inaugural STEM Summit

Remarks from TCC’s Inaugural STEM Summit

Dear Faculty, Staff, Principals, Teachers, and Students, Welcome to the first annual STEM Summit! On behalf of Tallahassee Community College, and in partnership with Leon County Schools, we are delighted to have you join us for this year’s event. It is predicted that 60 percent of all children attending school today will work in career fields that do not currently exist. That means we need to develop a workforce of skilled critical thinkers who know how to create, innovate and…

Celebrating a New Academic Year

Celebrating a New Academic Year

Things are busy at TCC as we prepare to welcome all our new and returning students for the start of fall semester next week. This is always an exciting time here at the College, and it is hard to believe this will mark my 20th year at TCC and my 10th as president! Each year, we suspend operations for faculty and staff professional development and our annual welcome back event, Eagles RISE. We also host Convocation for our students the…

2019-20 Budget

I am pleased to share that the College’s 2019-20 operating budget was presented and approved at Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting. Despite some revenue challenges, the College was able to focus on our strategic priorities by implementing a number of programs and practices in areas such as revenue generation and utilities cost-savings measures. We will continue to directly invest in our employees. This budget provides a 2% pay raise for all full-time, eligible positions effective July 1, as well as…

To The Class Of 2019

To The Class Of 2019

This weekend, we will be hosting our annual commencement ceremony, capping off nearly two weeks of events celebrating the nearly 3,000 students who have earned the right to call themselves a college graduate this year. This is the favorite part of my job – getting to shake the hand of every one of our new graduates and commend them on their hard work and achievement always brings me back to why we’re here. Each year, TCC welcomes thousands of students…

She will assume her position with the College on May 13. This will allow a period…

As an institution of higher education, free and open debate in a public forum is part of our DNA. The forum that higher education provides to raise difficult and contentious questions of public concern in civil debate is a tradition going back centuries. At TCC, we have the privilege of welcoming students from all walks of life to our campus each year where they enter a learning environment that purposefully exposes them to new ideas, challenges their preconceived notions and…

Florida’s Colleges Measure Up

Florida’s Colleges Measure Up

Last week, Florida TaxWatch, an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit taxpayer research institute, released a report on the economic impact of the Florida College System (FCS). It assessed the return-on-investment (ROI) to both our students and the state of Florida, and the results are significant. For students, a graduate of an FCS institution can expect increased earnings of up to $838,023 with an average ROI of 12% over the course of their career. For Florida, the FCS generates nearly 10,000 jobs each year (beyond…

I’m grateful for our institution, the opportunity TCC provides for a better future for our students, and our legacy as one of the top two-year colleges in the nation. I am grateful for those that came before us and made us what we are today. I am…
